St. Joseph’s College is moving to Canvas, a new learning management system (LMS) designed from the ground up to enhance the student learning experience.  The move will be a careful transition next year, and as of Summer 2017, Canvas will be used within both online and on-ground venues.

After a successful pilot of Canvas in online classes this last academic year, many students found that Canvas offers a wide variety of new features and, in particular, that it engaged them effectively. In particular, Canvas

  • Has a clean and uncluttered look to it
  • Connects with Twitter, LinkedIn and Google Docs
  • Allows you to set course notifications that go right to your phone or email—whatever is easiest for you
  • Improves communication with and between students via its video and audio tools
  • Saves time and cognitive energy when locating and using course materials
  • Has an excellent track record, with 24/7/365 support

This LMS initiative is a college-wide transition that will (as of next summer) affect all courses taught at SJC: traditional face-to-face, hybrid, online and continuing education courses.

During the transition period, students may need to access both Blackboard and Canvas, because some courses will be in one LMS while others are in the other.  Prior to the start of a course, faculty will advise students which LMS they can use to access their courses.

The College’s current Learning Management System, Blackboard, will continue to be available until June 30, 2017.

When will courses be taught in Canvas?

Fall 2016, Intersession 2017 and Spring 2017 are “opt-in” terms for campus-based instructors who want to teach one or more of their courses in Canvas. Beginning with Summer 2017, all courses that are scheduled for a given term will be taught in Canvas.

How will I know where to find my courses?

Your instructors will let you know which system they are teaching your course(s) in. You will only have access to Canvas if your instructor is using Canvas. If the first day of classes begins and you don’t see your course in either system, and if you have not heard from your instructor, contact him or her by email.

Can I access Canvas from a mobile device?

The Canvas by Instructure app is the mobile version of Canvas that helps you stay current with your courses anywhere you go. Download the Canvas by Instructure app on Android and iOS devices.

After you install this app, you must enter St. Joseph's College for the school name.

What type of training and support will students have?

See Canvas Student Getting Started Guide You can also access 24/7/365 technical support for Canvas (by phone, email and chat) by clicking the Help link on the left side navigation of the Canvas screen.
